Lake Tahoe has stolen my heart and soul. From the sparkling blue water to the towering peaks, it’s a slight to behold.
I have been to Lake Tahoe many times, and always have a blast exploring the different scenic locations.
A highlight of my most recent trip was hiking Mount Tallac. And let me tell you… it was pure magic!
Views for days, a cheeky chipmunk stealing my snacks, and that feeling of total awe that only comes when you’re standing on top of the world.
So in this post, I’m breaking down my Mount Tallac adventure, plus other must-do hikes in Lake Tahoe… from beginner-friendly strolls to quad-burning climbs. Let’s gooooooooo!

🏔️ Mount Tallac: My Solo Summit Story
Trailhead: Mount Tallac Trailhead (off Mount Tallac Road near Fallen Leaf Lake)
Distance: ~10.2 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~3,300 feet
Difficulty: Hard
Time: 6–8 hours
Trail Type: Out & back
Parking: Free, but fills up early—get there by 7:30 AM if you want a spot!
Let’s start with the obvious: this hike is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge, the reward is next level.
The trail starts off mellow-ish, giving you beautiful views of Fallen Leaf Lake early on. About 1.5 miles in, you hit Floating Island Lake and then Cathedral Lake shortly after… both super pretty rest spots if you’re pacing yourself.

Then comes the climb. The trail gets steep, rocky, and a little scrambly.
I was definitely breathing heavy, but solo hiking this one was empowering AF.
And at the top? PANORAMIC VIEWS OF LAKE TAHOE that took my breath away… I legit cried a little. No shame.
Also, a tiny chipmunk stole my lunch. He was cute, and I forgave him.
Pro tips:
- Bring tons of water in a water bladder (like 3L+), especially in summer.
- Trekking poles will be your BFFs.
- Pack layers… the summit can get windy and cold, even in the summer.
- Start early to beat the heat and the crowds.

Other Gorgeous Lake Tahoe Hikes (Ranked: Easy ➡️ Hard)
You don’t have to climb Mount Tallac to get epic views. Tahoe is full of jaw-dropping trails. Here are a few of my faves, from mellow to mega:
🟢 EASY HIKES
Eagle Lake Trail (Emerald Bay)
Distance: ~2 miles round trip

Spooner Lake Loop
Distance: ~2.5 miles
Elevation Gain: Minimal
Time: 1 hour
Why I love it: Peaceful, mostly flat loop with wildflowers, aspens, and occasional deer sightings. A chill escape.
🟡 MODERATE HIKES
Cascade Falls Trail
Distance: ~1.4 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~200 feet
Time: 30–60 mins
Why I love it: Technically easy, but the terrain is rocky, so I’m putting it here. Great waterfall views, especially in spring/early summer.

🔴 CHALLENGING HIKES
Mt. Rose Trail
Distance: ~10.7 miles round trip
Elevation Gain: ~2,300 feet
Time: 5–7 hours
Why Hike It?: One of the highest peaks around Lake Tahoe (10,776 ft). Snowfields, waterfalls, and top-of-the-world vibes.
Maggie’s Peaks via Bayview Trailhead

Time: 2.5–4 hours
Why I love it: Super steep, but you’re rewarded fast. The views of Emerald Bay from the top are epic!
