Whether you’re just getting into hiking or you’re a seasoned pro looking for a challenge, Mount Shasta’s trails won’t disappoint.

At an elevation of 14,179 feet, Mount Shasta is a potentially active volcano at the southern end of the Cascade Range.

1. Lake Siskiyou Trail (Easy Peasy)

Difficulty: Easy
Length: 7 mile loop
Elevation Gain: 200 feet

Looking for an easy trail that offers some gorgeous views without breaking a sweat? The Lake Siskiyou Trail is the way to go. This 7 mile jaunt through the forest leads to a stunning viewpoint of Mount Shasta overlooking the lake. Perfect for beginners, families, or anyone who just wants to enjoy nature without climbing anything too steep. It’s a great hike all year round.

One note… In the winter months, the bridge across the Sacramento river is taken out. If you happen to be hiking during that time, you either have to turn around or walk across the river. Either way, it’s still a great hike!

2. Castle Lake to Heart Lake Trail (A Sweet Challenge)

Length: 3 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,175 feet

Ready to up your hiking game just a little? Castle Lake to Heart Lake Trail is the perfect middle ground. The 3 mile trail takes you through some gorgeous forest landscapes, then leads you to the breathtaking view of Castle Lake. Once you get there, take a dip in the cool water (if you’re feeling brave) or just chill by the shore and soak up the views. Mount Shasta makes an epic backdrop!

Want a great balance of challenge and rewards? Gray Butte Trail is just the ticket. This 7-mile hike offers a good workout without the insane elevation gain of some of the other routes. The views from the top? Absolutely worth it. From Gray Butte’s summit, you’ll get a 360-degree view of Mount Shasta and the surrounding valleys.

This trail starts on Mount Shasta at Lower Panther Meadow. Hike through the campground to the meadow. Follow the signs that say “Gray Butte”.

Now, if you’re looking for a mountaineering adventure, Mount Shasta summit via Avalanche Gulch trail is where it’s at. This is a tough one—like, serious mountaineering gear required.

Avalanche Gulch one of the most popular routes for summiting Mount Shasta, and while it’s absolutely stunning, it’s also technically challenging. You’ll need ice axes, crampons, ropes, and some solid experience. It’s definitely not a casual day hike, but if you’re looking to push yourself to the limit, this is the trail for you.

It’s highly recommended to hire a local guide for this trek.
